About the Author

Agatha Christie is without a doubt one of the world's greatest mystery writers.  Christie was born on 15 September 1890 in Torquay, England. As a child of five years, Christie had taught herself to read, as her mother had decided that she would not receive a formal education. At the age of eleven, Christie's father passed away, causing her to grow even closer to her mother. Christie's mother loved to travel, and passed this love on to her daughter. In 1912, Agatha Christie met Archie Christie, her future husband.

It is somewhat strange to think that Christie did not become a writer until later in her life, after she had participated in pharmaceutical and war-time careers. In fact, Christie did not even write her first story until her sister, Madge, dared her to write one. This story, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, took several years to publish but was eventually a success.

On August 5, 1919, Rosalind Christie, Agatha Christie's only daughter, was born. However, in the coming years Christie's life fell apart with the death of her mother and the end of her marriage to Archie Christie. After rebuilding her life, Christie returned to her love of travel and made her second trip to Baghdad, where she met her future second husband, Max Mallowan. Christie accompanied Mallowan on the rest of his archeological advntures for the next 30 years of her life.

Agatha Christie died on January 12, 1976.
